Archeological Museum of Deià

This small but fascinating museum is set in a restored 17th century mill, one of the oldest buildings in the village of Deià. The museum was founded in 1962 by the American archaeologist William H. Waldren. The visit shows the development of modern archeology on the island and the origins of the first human settlements in Mallorca. Most of the exhibits belong to findings made by Waldren himself, who began excavations in the 50s in different areas around Deià and Valldemossa. The American archaeologist is present during the all exhibition, as it can be seen the professionalism of a person who was able to integrate his knowledge in contemporary art with his passion for archeology. It was Waldren who, along with other local and international artists, reformed the old mill and created the first modern museum on the island. Nowadays, it’s also an important cultural center that organises archeology workshops for children.
