Miramar Monastery

Miramar was founded in 1276 by Ramon Llull as a monastery and school of oriental languages, where Franciscans learned Arabic before departing to evangelise Northern Africa. Later on, it was property of different monastic orders and in 1487 it was an important scenery of Mallorca’s history, as it housed the first press on the island. After a period of decline the monastery was bought by Archduke Luis Salvator of Austria in 1872, who made an important work of restoration. Nowadays Miramar has become a museum dedicated to the two different historical moments lived by Ramon Llull and the Archduke. Around the property there’s an old mill, a Byzantine garden and a cloister that Luis Salvador rebuilt from the Gothic arches from the convent of Santa Margalida of Palma.
