Mallorca’s Cathedral

The Cathedral is the most symbolic monument in the island, a majestic Gothic building that faces the Mediterranean sea and dominates the astonishing view of Palma’s Bay. No matters how many times you have seen it, it has a unique magnetism that will always surprise you. It was built in the site of Medina Mayurca Mosque in 1229, after the conquer of the island by Jaume I from the Crown of Aragon, and dedicated to Saint Mary. Its construction lasted for centuries and it was finally achieved in 1601. The architectonical style is Gótico Levantino, Gothic form the Eastern coast of Spain, with Northern Europe influences. The interior of the cathedral equals the beauty of the exterior, with an intimate atmosphere and a magnificent couloured rose window, one of the biggest of Gothic style all over the world. One of the most surprising particularities of the cathedral is the mural in one of the side chapels done by the Majorcan artist Miquel Barceló. There are no words to describe it, but it’s surely one of the most original things that can be seen inside a cathedral.

During Christmas and particular days classical music concerts and other events take place within the cathedral.
