Lluc Monastery

The name of the Sanctuary of Santa Maria de Lluc comes from “Lucus”, meaning sacred forest in Latin. The sanctuary was built in 13th century in the heart of the beautiful Sierra de Tramuntana and it’s considered a sacred place of pilgrimage, where resides the Virgin of Lluc, patron saint of Mallorca. Every year in august is carried out a massive event called “Marcha des Güell a Lluch a peu” in which more than 50,000 people from all over the island march in pilgrimage on a journey of more than 48 kilometers to arrive to the monastery.

The surroundings are astonishing, if you take a walk around the monastery you’ll enjoy a view from above of the Sierra de Tramuntana. There’s also an interesting  botanical garden, established in 1956.
