La Almudaina Palace

The Royal Castle of La Almudaina stands beside Mallorca’s Cathedral, making the most characteristic image of the city of Palma and an indispensable visit. The palace was originally the ancient Muslim fortress and it was rebuilt in the early years of 14th century after the Catalan Reconquista. Even so, remains of the original Arab Citadel of 12th and 13th  centuries can still be traced in the form and decorations of the present building. The reconstruction was done under Jaime II and facilitated the development of the king’s court of Mallorca. It was successively the court of the monarchs of the kingdom of Mallorca, the Aragon one and the Spanish one. The structure has two different rooms, one on the ground floor, where the medieval style is recreated through artworks from the 15th century to the 20th. The upper floor, used for holding official events of the Royal Family, is decorated with objects and furniture from other royal sites of the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.

Nowadays,  La Almudaina is the official summer residence of the king of Spain, but he actually stays with the whole Royal Family at Marivent Palace.
