The Consolat del Mar (Consulate of the Sea) was a medieval institution of the Crown of Aragon established to create merchants’ rights. Its main functions were related to trade regulations and maritime affairs in commercial matters and, for this reason, it was built right behind Mallorca’s Lonja (the old market). The current building was built in 16th century and it has a Gothic chapel, modified in 17th century, which was the former School of La Lonja. The Consolat is currently the headquarters of the Presidency of the Government of the Balearic Islands.
